Flora in Winter @ WAM

Visit the Worcester Art Museum this week for "Flora in Winter".  WAM's website describes it as "a succulent feast for the eyes and spirit in the middle of winter.  At the Museum, 23 works from the collection are interpreted in flowers.  Public spaces are adorned by area florists."
Check the schedule here- but there are free events on Friday and Saturday.

  1. First and foremost, I was really excited to see so many people at the Worcester Art Museum. With everything this is going on in the economy, I worry about losing the arts because people are consumed with "more important" things.

As a whole, it was a nice event to go to in the middle of winter. I forget how little you see of nature during these cold cold months. And for this, I appreciated the exhibit. But whether of not I thought that the flower arrangements represented the paintings, I don't think that they did. The florist seemed to focus on the color and shapes of the objects/people in the paintings. But that is not all a painting is. The florist forgot to recreate the mood of the painting or the way is makes the viewer feel. My favorite flower arrangement was not my favorite because I particularly like the flowers, but I thought that it went nicely with the painting because the arrangement had a similar mood.

Thinking more about this made me realize the importance of the feelings you get from a painting. At least for me, the emotion I get from a piece of art sticks with me longer (and is easier for me to remember) than the details of the actual artwork.

Regardless, I did like looking at the flowers. I just tried to separate them from the works of art they were representing.
