  1. It was interesting to see Leslie Schomp's artwork and learn about her process at the "Art a la Carte" talk today. She began by giving a brief summary of her childhood - she has seven other brothers and sisters, and although her family is American, she spent most of her childhood living in Ireland. At catholic school in Ireland, Leslie acquired a passion for needlepoint. It was interesting to see how her large family and her love of sewing greatly affected her artwork.

Leslie then told us about her experiences as an art student in college and graduate school, and showed us some of her early artwork. She did many self-portraits as a young artist because she said it was her way of exploring who she was as an artist.

Leslie then showed us some of her more contemporary work. My favorite pieces were her paintings of figures using watercolor and ink. The lungs of the figures were painted in white, so they stood out dramatically against the dark colors of the rest of the painting. Leslie said that the white lungs were inspired by her younger brother's heart condition. Through living with him she became conscious of our vital organs that we so often take for granted.

I was glad I went to this talk because it was encouraging to see an artist's journey from college student to successful artist. It made the notion of becoming an artist seem less daunting and more doable. The pizza was delicious, too!
